Snowy Weather at Stratton
(Note: Click here for a bunch of today's weather reports.)
There is a calendar at Stratton that says, "On June 1st, "Take down Christmas Tree", and then on October 1st, "Put on Snow Tires". We actually have pictures on this website of one snowfall that came in early June, and other 6"snowfall that arrived in late October.
In the Stratton winter, generally November through April, it usually snows at Stratton. Now with global warming, there is also a lot of wet weather, i.e. rain and ice pellets, during the winter. The 2007 / 2008 season, for example, had 200 inches of snow, and if there were not the few warm rains from the East, it would have been well over 300 inches. As it was, there was no place to put the snow at Stratton at the end of February. Parking lots were filling up, not with cars, but with snow.
But is fresh powder really perfect, we are thinking? On March 1st, 2008 it snowed so much you could not see and the groomed trails, forget them. They did not exist. It was like ... well the rockies visiting the East. The day after, and the week after was almost perfect. Well not perfect, since it froze the night of March 9th. The pictures on the top and side were taken around March 12, 2008.
So, instead of showing you beautiful pictures, the day after the snow, when the sun is shining, it is 20 degrees, and you can fly through everywhere, we thought we should show you what it is like trying to ski or snowboard through a snowy day.
